Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra – The Festival of Divine Mercy
What is Jagannath Rath Yatra?
Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the oldest and most celebrated spiritual festivals in the world. It is the grand chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, where the Lord comes out of His temple and travels on a magnificent chariot to bless everyone.
The word “Rath” means chariot, and “Yatra” means journey. Therefore, Rath Yatra means “The Chariot Journey of the Lord.”
This festival has been celebrated for thousands of years in Jagannath Puri, Odisha, India, and is attended by millions of people from around the world.
Who is Lord Jagannath?
Lord Jagannath is Lord Sri Krishna Himself.
The name “Jagannath” means:
Jagat – Universe
Nath – Lord
Therefore, Jagannath means “The Lord of the Universe.”
Lord Jagannath appears together with:
Lord Baladeva (Balarama) – His elder brother
Subhadra Devi – His beloved sister
These three divine personalities are worshiped together on the altar and during Rath Yatra.
Why Does Lord Jagannath Have a Unique Form?
According to Vedic scriptures, Lord Krishna once became overwhelmed with spiritual ecstasy while hearing about the love of the residents of Vrindavan.
As He experienced intense transcendental emotions, His eyes became large, His limbs appeared withdrawn, and He manifested the beautiful form now worshiped as Lord Jagannath.
This form represents Krishna’s unlimited love and mercy for all living beings.
The History of Jagannath Rath Yatra
The Rath Yatra festival originates from Jagannath Puri in Odisha, where Lord Jagannath resides in His magnificent temple.
Every year, Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra travel from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple on giant wooden chariots.
The Gundicha Temple represents Vrindavan, the sacred place where Lord Krishna performed His childhood pastimes.
The journey symbolizes Krishna’s desire to return to Vrindavan and meet His loving devotees.
For centuries, kings, saints, scholars, and millions of pilgrims have participated in this sacred festival.
The Spiritual Meaning of Rath Yatra
Rath Yatra teaches that God is not limited to a temple.
Out of His compassion, the Lord comes out to meet everyone:
Rich and poor
Young and old
Men and women
People of all religions and backgrounds
Lord Jagannath’s mercy is available to everyone.
The festival reminds us that God wants every soul to return to Him and experience eternal happiness.
Why Do Devotees Pull the Chariot?
Pulling the ropes of Lord Jagannath’s chariot is considered a great spiritual blessing.
The ropes symbolize devotion and surrender to God.
When devotees pull the chariot, they pray:
“Please pull my heart closer to You.”
The real purpose is not merely moving the chariot but developing love for the Lord.
What Happens During Rath Yatra?
During the festival devotees:
Chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra
Dance in kirtan
Pull the chariots
Hear spiritual discourses
Distribute prasadam (sanctified food)
Worship Lord Jagannath
Associate with devotees

The entire atmosphere becomes joyful, spiritual, and uplifting.
